How to Open a DST File

What Is a DST File?

DST is one of the most widely used embroidery machine file formats. It contains the stitch information your embroidery machine needs to sew a design.

A DST file normally contains stitch data rather than the original artwork. This means the file is prepared for embroidery production, but it may not be as easily editable as an AI, SVG, or other artwork file.

What Do You Need to Open a DST File?

You can use compatible embroidery software or an embroidery file viewer to open and inspect a DST file.

  1. Embroidery digitizing software
  2. Machine-specific embroidery software
  3. DST file viewers
  4. Embroidery machine control software
Good to know: You do not necessarily need the same software that was used to create the DST file just to view it.

How to Open a DST File

1

Locate Your DST File

Find the .DST file on your computer, download folder, or USB drive.

2

Open Your Software

Launch compatible embroidery software or a DST file viewer.

3

Import the File

Choose Open, Import, or the equivalent option and select your DST file.

4

Review the Design

Check the design preview, dimensions, stitch count, thread colors, and other available information.

Before Sending the File to Your Machine

A file can open correctly but still require checking before production. Always review the following details:

Design size
Stitch count
Thread colors
Stitch sequence
Hoop compatibility
Design orientation
Trims
Jump stitches

Can You Edit a DST File?

A DST file is primarily a stitch file, so editing it is more limited than editing the original artwork.

If you need major changes such as changing the design, lettering, size, stitch count, or stitch quality, it is often better to have the design professionally edited or re-digitized.

Tip: Avoid significantly resizing a DST file without checking the stitch quality. Changing the size can affect stitch density and embroidery results.
